Interviews with a County Councillor and a representative of the Gypsy Council.
Distant view of travellers’ caravans and cars. Young boys riding bikes. Caravans seen through trees. Cambridgeshire County Councillor Gerald Coteman is asked how seriously he views the problem with gypsies in the county. He replies that the problem has doubled in the past 18 months. The Council want to solve this but they need government help in identifying acceptable sites for travellers and achieving designation of sites to achieve a controlled situation in Cambridgeshire. He says the Council also needs more powers to control unlawful activities. Asked whether the Council are being a little intolerant of gypsies, he replies that they are pursuing a non-harassment policy in line with the 1968 Caravan Sites Act but the public are pressing for more control. Peter Mercer of the Gypsy Council says that the current restrictions are quite adequate and that local authorities have sufficient powers to remove what they call illegal encampments. He says that travellers are opposed to designation in any form as that restricts their freedom of movement and choice of residence. For such arrangements to be fair, there needs to be adequate provision for traveller sites. The reporter was Marcus Powell for this video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
