Employment and Unemployment in the Norwich Diocese - The Implications for Church and Society.

This story opens with the cover of a report commissioned by the Diocese of Norwich, “Employment and Unemployment in the Norwich Diocese - The Implications for Church and Society”. Standing in front of a church, Anglia TV reporter Chris Young summarises the findings of the report – that prospects for employment are gloomy for present and future and that politicians lack the vision to tackle the nation’s job queues. It is stated that in Norfolk one in four unemployed people are under 25, more than 1,000 jobs in agriculture are lost each year, and Norfolk people work more overtime than elsewhere. Tom Gilbert, Social Responsibility Officer for Norwich Diocese says that overtime is a question of morality because it deprives people of potential employment and overtime working affects family life. He suggests that continental legislation regarding overtime might provide guidelines. His view is that politicians will not admit to the scale of the unemployment problem because they are unwilling to address the prospect that employment will not return to previous levels. Scene of an unemployed person seeking help at one of the network of employment advice centres being established by churches in Norfolk and employing social workers. They are offering community service schemes to help provide job experience and working with the Manpower Services Commission. This video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
