Anglia Television video to accompany a new story that local councillor Charles Swift fears a racial backlash following an attack on the Asian Cultural Centre at Peterborough. Exterior views of the Asian Cultural Centre where every window was broken in an early morning attack with damage estimated at £500. Chief Superintendent Colin Street says the police cannot rule out a racial motive as commercial premises either side of the centre were not attacked. They are committed to catching the offender and he appeals to the Asian community to continue to show restraint as the police do this work. The reporter was John Kiddey for this video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.

Additional Description

Charles Swift, mentioned in this news story but not appearing in the video, was a long serving Councillor in Peterborough and served as Mayor and as leader of the Council over three periods totalling 20 years. Swift played a leading role in the expansion of Peterborough in the 1960s and 1970s as a member of Peterborough Development Corporation. He made his mark nationally in 1972 when the city was one of the first to welcome Asian refugees from Uganda, offering 50 council houses for their accommodation.
