At a branch of Peterborough Building Society, staff at desks assist customers with longer enquiries. At the counter, a man hands over his account book to deposit £5 and the request is processed through the computers and printer. A customer uses the external cash machine to withdraw £5, and another customer receives a Co-operative Bank Visa card. Martin Armstrong, General Manager of the Peterborough Building Society, explains that they are aiming to respond to customer requirements as reported by the National Consumer Council which says customers of building societies are looking for cash dispenser, standing order and cheque book services. Anglia TV reporter Marcus Powell asks if this is an attempt to draw business away from the banks. More scenes of customers being served. David Lockwood-Jones, Manager at Midland Bank, says that building societies are encroaching on the banks regarding lending and saving schemes, and their new services have been offered by the banks for many years. More scenes of customers inside the building society and a man in a sheepskin coat at the cash point. Standing outside a branch of Barclays Bank, the reporter says the role of both banks and building societies has expanded considerably across mortgages, credit cards, cash points and standing orders. Barclays Bank is experimenting with limited Saturday opening. Building societies are asking for a change in the law so they can begin to offer unsecured loans and deal in foreign currency. More choice and more competition will be good news for customers. This video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
