Farmers and government minister discuss damaged crops.

Over scenes of fields of cereal crops, Anglia TV reporter Rebecca Atherstone explains that a 20 minute hailstorm on 26 May 1985 damaged crops of winter wheat, winter wheat and spring beans across an area of 10 square miles affecting 50 – 60 farms in Essex. Farmers lost thousands of pounds through damage to the growing crops. Michael Jopling, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, says he is visiting to assess the situation. He is shown a bowl of large hailstones from the event which were kept in a freezer by farmer Tom Matthews who lost 50 acres of crops. The minister is asked about the possibility of financial aid or compensation but says there is not a precedent in terms of income aid for damage to crops rather than buildings. Tom Matthews says the National Farmers Union have approached the EEC without success as yet, and it is hoped that the UK government will find a way to assist smaller farmers who might lose their livelihoods. Scenes of the minister and farmers inspecting the damaged crops. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia. On 20/8/1885 Anglia TV reported that the government decision was not to pay compensation to the farmers who lost £1.5 in the freak hailstorm.
