Brief scenes of the visit and research projects demonstrated when the Duke of Edinburgh visits Cranfield.

Brief scenes accompanying an Anglia Television news story. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visits the Cranfield Institute of Technology. After arrival by helicopter, he meets the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and the Chancellor of the Institute and they shake hands. He is shown two research developments at the Institute. The first is development of the Super Bus to withstand extreme damage and protect passengers’ lives during crashes. A photograph on the wall illustrates aspects of the project, funded by the Department of the Environment, and there is a demonstration relating to impact. The second is research into processing straw into animal food and fuel pellets as an alternative to straw burning in the field. Outside, with an aeroplane in the background, Prince Philip chats as people look on.

Background Information

Cranfield's airfield was originally an RAF training airfield and was used after the war by the College of Aeronautics, which became Cranfield Institute of Technology, and then Cranfield University.
