Aeroplane safety affected by passengers’ entertainment devices.
Anglia TV reporter Rebecca Atherstone stands next to a Monarch Airlines plane at Luton Airport to explain the potential hazard of passengers using personal compact stereo players while on board. As electronic games and cassettes become more advanced the risk of causing interference on the flight deck increases. In the past week, a jet crossing the Atlantic went off course by 70 miles because the signals from a passenger’s personal hi-fi interfered with the aeroplane controls. Scene of ground crew working on a plane. Captain Don McAngus, Flight Operations Director of Monarch Airlines, sits in the cockpit surrounded by the controls. He says it has been company policy for the past two years not to allow use of any electronic equipment in the cabin as any kind of equipment might pose a risk, although other airlines are taking a different approach. He explains that even when a passenger is sitting at the back of the plane, there may be aerials and wires nearby within the structure of the plane. Scenes of passengers with luggage leaving the airport terminal. More scenes in the cockpit where Captain MCAngus shows those areas which would be affected by electronic interference, including the radios and computer displays of the navigation track-line. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
