VE Day Party
1945 , Aspley Guise (Bedfordshire)
Cat no. 1698
A village celebrates the allied victory in Europe.
The Bedfordshire village of Aspley Guise joins together to celebrate the victory of the Allied Forces in Europe in May 1945. Bunting adorns the town centre, where a large children's street party is held in The Square, right next to the evening's bonfire which features 'Hitler in the right place'. Elsewhere in the village, similar outdoor tea parties are held in a backyard on Mount Pleasant and in the middle of San Remo Road. As the sky darkens, villagers dance, light street lamps for the first time in five and a half years and let the flames lick around Herr Hitler, as Britain celebrates long into the night.
