Introduction To Anglia
1959 , Norwich (Norfolk)
Cat no. 1670
The programme controller introduces the arrival of Independent TV to East Anglia, and gives a flavour of what to expect from the station.
A young woman sifts through a pile of prospective Anglia TV logos, whilst the narrator notes that the company is so new it has yet to confirm a station symbol. A shot of an unidentified church is shown, before the camera pans to the garden of a large country house. Programme controller Stephen McCormack is introduced; he is sitting in a deckchair. He introduces Anglia TV, before noting that its first TV play, starring Laurence Harvey, will largely be filmed outside Zurich. McCormack then introduces an overhead shot of Anglia House, Norwich, where workmen on scaffolding are busy turning the old Agricultural Hall into TV studios. Next is more footage of Laurence Harvey and Hildegard Knef rehearsing 'The Violent Years' in London, holding and kissing each other passionately. The action cuts to McCormack smoking a pipe and telling the audience of the plans to cover the whole of the region. Cue shots of a Norfolk field; Elm Hill, Norwich; Blickling Hall, Norfolk; King's College, Cambridge; an unidentified broad, and Norwich Cathedral. There is a shot of the construction of the Mendlesham transmitter, with close-ups of the tower and workers. McCormack concludes by remarking upon the arrival of his own TV set, announcing that while East Anglia may not yet be able to receive Anglia TV coverage, there is a good play on the BBC that evening!
