Introducing Paul James

The early years of Paul James.

This is a family film shot by Paul James' father and others. The titles of the film are placed on the hood of Paul James' pram, which is turned around to reveal Paul James. There are three shots of Paul in his pram taken on two different days (the clothing varies in the third shot). He is wearing a romper suit and cardigan along with a woollen hat. There are shots of Paul James and his mother beside their company van, a photography and printing company. This is followed by scenes from Paul James' christening party. He is held by his older brother, David, and by his parents and god-parents. The next sequence shows Paul James and the family on the beach at Hunstanton. There are two shots taken of him in his pram. The second shows him amused at having a net, like a net shopping bag, placed over his head. His mother and grandmother have taken their knitting with them. Paul James is filmed in the sea, being fed and being given a bottle of water on the sand. Paul James eats ice cream, getting more of it on him than in him. A few shots showing Paul James being bathed, precede film of Christmas, 1963. The first few sequences show Paul James with his parents at their family home. Paul is dressed as Father Christmas. Paul, his brother David and their mother open Christmas presents. There follow other Christmas scenes of Paul with various family members. A brief shot of Paul on the lawn in summer precedes a sequence showing another bath. This time Paul James is old enough to run away and then to watch his bath being run. He has a plastic duck which he chews on. The final sequence shows Paul James with a brush, helping his brother David to wash the yard.
