Care of machinery during wartime
The film begins with shots of farm machinery being tended by farm workers and land girls. The commentary stresses that farm machinery is a vital weapon. Machinery and spare parts are not easily replaced. The film stresses the role of neglect in the breakdown of machinery. Some effects are shown, together with how easy it is to avoid them. The film commentary stresses that despite care, parts still wear and break. These can be welded.There is a shot of the sign outside a blacksmiths who is a certificated welder. There are interior shots of the smithy showing the blacksmith using an oxy- acetylene blow torch to mend a broken mower rod. There is a shot of his welding proficiency certificate from the Rural Industries Board. There are shots of work waiting to be completed. The strength of a welded joint is tested in a vice. The film shows the process of bronze welding, using the broken sump plate from a Fordson tractor to demonstrate. There are shots of other examples, including a new tooth built up on a gear wheel.The film also urges farmers to look into scrap heaps for spare parts before they go for salvage. The final shots are of machinery at use in a field.
