Shots from Riverside Road across the River Wensum showing pleasure boats on and the river frontage of Read's Flour Mill. The commentary explains that this was initially called 'Albion Mill' and was built during the 1830s as a yarn mill. It was bought by Robert John Read in 1932 for use as a flour mill. Shots from King Street show the newer buildings of the modern company, Read Woodrow Ltd. The commentary explains that closure of the mill was announced in April, 1993. As a lorry backs into the plant, the commentary explains that river deliveries stopped in the 1970s. Interior shots show grain being delivered and there are interior shots of the plant. 3,000 tons of wheat can be stored in the silos and a further 2,500 at Carrow Wharf. There are shots of the wheat distribution floor where Peter Reeve, the distribution and packaging manager walks. The flour bins were installed in the 1970s. On the sifter floor, Lynn Sharrock takes a sample of the flour. Further samples are taken on the roll floor. These go to the laboratory where they are tested for moisture and protein. There are shots of the pre-packing line, introduced in the early 1990s. The 1 1/2 kilo bags pass through a weight checker. The different types of flour produced are shown in their bags. Closure began in June 1993 and took eight weeks. Closure was due to a variety of reasons. These included competition, inability to expand on the site and distribution problems. 75 workers were made redundant but 80% had found other work. The film ends showing building work on site.
