The formation of the Norwich Aero Club and the opening of the Mousehold Aerodrome, 25th February, 1927

Newsreel story. A number of planes on the ground at Mousehold. A twin-engined bi-plane takes off followed by two smaller bi-planes. The pilots are visible above the main body of the planes. Another aircraft takes off and performs some aerobatic tricks. After the intertitle regarding the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, the Lord Mayor is filmed being fitted with flying gear and having his chain of office places around his neck. He is filmed at the controls of a Boulton and Paul aeroplane, G - EAWS which then takes off

Background Information

The Mousehold Aerodrome had been used by Boulton and Paul for test flights since 1912. During World War I it was taken over by the Royal Flying Corps and an airfield covering 263 acres was laid down. After World War I, the airfield continued to be used by Boulton and Paul to test aircraft. In 1927 it became the home of the Norwich Aero Club, which was formed on February 25th, following a flying demonstration. Two of the main protagonists were Mr. A.A. Rice, Sheriff of Norwich, and the Lord Mayor, Sir Robert Bignold, seen in this film. In 1932 it was decided that Mousehold airfield was to become the site for Norwich Airport. This was opened on 21st June, 1933 by HRH The Prince of Wales. Although not an operational airfield during World War II, the aerodrome was bombed many times. Still used by Boulton and Paul, it became a 'K' site decoy for RAF Horsham St. Faith between 1940 and 1942. The Aerodrome was last used in 1950. After the war the airport was moved to Horsham St. Faith. The Heartsease housing Estate was built on the site of the Aerodrome. Heartsease High School stands on the site of the buildings shown in the film.
