The importance of good hedging.

Shots of farms showing the field patterns and hedges. Examples of bad types of hedges are shown; those that are too bulky, too tall or too thin. Dighton, a Northamptonshire hedger, and a land girl, demonstrate how to layer a hedge, or fill in the gaps in a thin hedge. Dighton shows he camera his tools; a slasher, a bill hook, leather gloves and an axe. Firstly he clears the hedge of dead wood and then shows how to cut stick to fill in the hedge. This also shows him compensating for previous bad jobs. He adds stakes and binders to shore up the hedge. The land girl then tries layering. The hedge is shown a year later. After two years the hedge should be trimmed. This is shown. The trimmings are burnt off on the field.
