Background Information
Eastern Daily Press. Monday, 13th April, 1998.FIVE DIE AS FLOODS DEVASTATE COUNTRY. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott yesterday pledged government help for areas devastated by flash floods after storms left five dead and caused damage running into millions of pounds. Mr. Prescott, visiting deluged towns in the Midlands, paid tribute to the 'remarkable spirit' of the people who have to cope with the misery of being swamped at holiday time. His tour came as fears rose that flooding in Cambridgeshire would grow worse, with the rivers Nene and Ouse still dangerously high, although floodwater on the Nene at Peterborough and nearby Wansford had receded from their peak by late last night.
