A look at the various events in Gaywood, 1949
The film begins with a long shot of St. Faith's Church, Gaywood. CEMS Go To Norwich. There is a very brief shot of the City Centre in Norwich. The City Hall can be seen in the background.Confirmation. Girls and women, all in white veils, are filmed leaving the Church. The Confirmees pose in the Churchyard with the Bishop of Norwich, men on one side and women on another. They parade out of the Churchyard, followed by the clergy and finally the Bishop. Carey-Smith Wedding. This shows the wedding of the Reverend Carey, the curate of St. Faith's Church to Miss Smith. The Reverend Carey arrives with another man. The bride arrives with her father. The couple pose outside the Church and then with guests.There is a static shot of the Rt. Rev. Percy, Herbert, Bishop of Norwich. One Sunday Morning. The congregation leave the Church. Some stop to speak to the Vicar as they leave.Dedication of Processional Cross. Alter boys leave the Church, the leader carrying the Processional Cross. They are followed by the Clergy. The alter boy poses for the camera holding the cross. Easter Bank Holiday Outing. A rowing boat is launched onto a river and a group pose outside Binham Abbey. They are filmed looking around inside the Abbey. The party leave the bus and there are shots of them on the bus.St. George's Day Church Parade. This scene shows Cubs, Scouts and Guides parading with clergy.Youth Gala. Young people and children receive prizes. The picture at this point is dark and faded, therefore it is difficult to see precisely what is happening. There are high angle shots that show the children eating at trestle tables. Various sports events are filmed including running races, a sack race, a wheelbarrow race and an obstacle course.The Brownies' Story. The brownies clean up some rubbish.Empire Youth Sunday United Service At Castle Acre. People pass under the ruined arch at Castle Acre Priory. A panning shot shows the massed crowd and the ruins. The parade passes through. Several Union Flags are carried. Michael Dewsbury reads the lesson. The sequence ends with further shots of the ruined priory.CEMS Stalwarts Clean Up Churchyard. A group of (mainly male) volunteers cut the grass and clear away the weeds from what had obviously become a very neglected, overgrown Churchyard.Whit-Monday Outing. Lunch At Blickling. A group have a picnic lunch on the grass. There is a shot of the front elevation of Blickling Hall.Bell Ringers At Gaywood. Tea On Rectory Lawn. People sit at tables on the lawn, eating.Garden Fete Opened By Lady Green. Lady Green gives a speech to open the Fete. She is -presented with a bouquet by a small girl. There is a dancing display.Scouts' Swimming Gala. Junior And Cubs Cups Won By Gaywood. This shows scenes of the boys swimming and of the spectators seated at the side of the swimming pool.Cubs Rally At Middleton. The cubs play games.Sunday School And Children's' Service. Outing To Hunstanton. There are scenes of people on the beach and in the sea. The lifeboat is launched from the beach. There are shots of people having tea. These contain some good children's faces.Brownies' Outing To Hunstanton. The brownies leave Hunstanton Railway Station and then pose for the camera in bathing costumes. There are shots of the girls on the each and inspecting a wrecked ship. The sequence finishes with a shot of the cliffs. However, this is too dark to show the famous two colours.Girl Guide Camp At Trimmingham. The guides unpack and pitch their tents. They are seen pulling a hand cart and cooking. Finally they run up the flag. There are shots of them on the beach.Portrait of a Lady. This short section shows only a pair of legs.Scrap Book for 1948/49.Kindergarten Sunday School Party At Rectory. Children are filmed in the rectory garden. There are various games including a running race, a hopping race, a wheelbarrow race and a ball game.Scout Camp At Holkham. The boys are filmed on a rope ladder and in a tent. They perform the camping tasks and play with a ball. In Holkham Park, the Canada Geese are filmed on the lake and another variety are filmed as the fly towards the camera. Our 'First Class Scouts.' P.L. Gerald Hamilton And P.L. Brian Sheldrake. After a shot of the cartoon character 'Tenderfoot Tim' there is a brief shot of the first class scouts as they return form their hike. This scenes is followed by the dedication of the Scout and Guide Flags.Old Folks' Club. They pose for the camera and then leave.Remembrance Sunday. This shows the band marching along a street. The clergy and choir parade followed by ex-servicemen, in civilian clothes, and members of the WRVS. There is an open air service at the war memorial. The choir sing and the Vicar gives a sermon. The Mayor stands next to him. A Soldier plays the last post.The film ends as it began with a shot of St. Faith's Church, Gaywood.
