[Street Scenes]
1960 , Colchester (Essex)
Cat no. 1129
Shots of bustling streets in Colchester, with heavy traffic and large crowds.
The first shots are of two different town centre streets in Colchester, the first a steep downhill road with heavy traffic, including cars and buses, and the second a larger, wider thoroughfare, with pedestrians attempting to cross the road. We then see - via jumpy camerawork - the exterior of Colchester Castle and its grounds, including a close-up of Colchester War Memorial, a statue of an angel holding a sword in the style of a crucifix. There are shots of a ruined wall and archway and then a Tudor style building with an overhanging wooden first floor. Next is an old, narrow street - possibly Trinity Street as it features the sign of the Clarence Inn public house. There are many pedestrians wearing early 1960s fashions. The final shot depicts two towers, one that of a church and the second possibly a clocktower.
