The funeral of the victims of the R101 disaster
The opening shots, from a fixed-camera position, show the funeral procession marching slowly along a country road, lined with trees and with crowds and the police. The lorries carrying the coffins are accompanied by airmen. Civilian dignitaries follow the coffins. Airmen carry wreaths. The actual sound of the film records the sounds of the traffic and of the band. This becomes louder as it approaches. At the graveyard, the crowds enter and gather around a mass grave. Coffins draped in Union Flags are carried in and placed in the grave. Wreathes line the edge of the grave. The band can be heard playing. There is a service, which is not heard, and a close-up shot of the officiating clergyman. A gun salute is fired over the coffins and bugles are sounded. Both of these are heard. There is a shot of the crowd before the film ends with the caption Requiescat in Pace.
