Background Information

The Cambridge to Mildenhall railway was 20 3/4 miles long. It opened in two parts. That from Cambridge to Fordham on 2nd June, 1884 and to Mildenhall on 1st April, 1885. There was always a problem with lack of passenger traffic on the line. In 1913 a 'push and pull' service was introduced to replace the slow turn round at Mildenhall. However, this turn round can be seen in this film. diesels took over the line in 1958. This steam train must have been one of the last to use the line. The railway had intermediate stations at Barnwell Junction, Fen Ditton, Quy, Bottisham and Lode, Swaffham Prior, Burwell, Exning Road, Fordham, Isleham and Worlington Golf Links Halt. Passenger services were halted on 18th June, 1962. Goods traffic ceased on 19th April, 1965. Michael Gates worked at Pye.
