Out With The Whelk Fishers

1958 , Brancaster (Norfolk)

The skipper and crew of the fishing boat Amethyst LN62 at work.

Shots of Brancaster Staithe. The fishermen gather their equipment and make for a rowing boat. One of them is carried aboard on the back of another. They row out to a motor boat. There are shots back to land and other boats are visible. There are shots of the crew aboard the motor boat and shots out to Scolt Head. The rest of the film shows the men at work. They cast the whelkpots overboard. These are hauled in and the catch shaken out. The whelks are sifted and the fishermen show the camera other creatures caught with them. These include sea urchins, crabs, starfish and other worm like creatures. Three catches are hauled in. The fishermen pause for food and drink before shovelling the smaller whelks and other debris back overboard. They return to Brancaster where they cast anchor. As the evening draws in they bring the catch ashore. The film ends with evening shots of Brancaster Staithe.

In most ordinary walks of life, breadwinning is an ordinary affair. Some find it different, and this story tells of a day at sea watching such work. This is the end of the film but not the work. Within a few hours the whelks will be boiled and on the way to market. Tomorrow, rain or shine, the Amethyst LN62 will set out again.
