Coronation Parade

1953 , Thetford (Norfolk)

Amateur footage of Thetford's parade celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Spectators and a brass band assemble in the town centre, others gather in front of the Guildhall. The procession turns the corner by the Central Hotel led by a church choir, and followed by the town's Mayor and dignitaries, school children, and uniformed organisations including scouts and guides. A service is held in the grounds of Thetford Priory. In the town, in front of the Lion Inn, girls entertain the crowds with country dancing. At night, torch flames are visible in procession, followed by a brief burst of fireworks.
