Documentary on Sudbury, exploring its past, its architecture, the importance of the River Stour, the local attractions and surrounding villages.
Market Hill, Sudbury on Market Day. Traffic, including buses and lorries, makes its way past the market. There are close-up of stalls. The commentary offers a brief history of the town, including its medieval past and its importance to the wool trade. There are views of St. Peter's Church and the Corn Exchange. A sequence shows Gainsborough's house. Local artists, Louis Prince (one of the founders of the Gainsborough House Society), Paul Eerie and Roland Sotherby are painting in the garden. Scenes along the River Stour in Sudbury and in the surrounding district. The commentary explains the geographical and industrial significance of the River. The film shows some of the attractions around Sudbury: the golf course at Newton Green and the Saracen's Head Public House. The 16th century Hyde Park Corner cottages are featured at Cavendish. At Clare, there are views of the old Priory, the White Swan Public House (claiming to have the oldest inn sign in Britain), and the modern Priory, re-established in 1954 as a training college for the Augustinian Order. The film returns to the River Stour, showing some of the Mills that have become private houses. Cobbold's Inn at Monks Eleigh is a working mill, as is a mill at Great Cornard. There are views of thatched cottages and scenes from the villages of Middleton, Kersey and Chelsworth. Churches feature, including the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul at Lavenham and the Church of the Holy Trinity at Long Melford. The film closes with further views of Kersey.
