Annual Ploughing Match

1973 , Canewdon (Essex)

Rochford Hundred Agricultural Society's annual ploughing competition is held at the village of Canewdon where local filmmaker Frank Pigram records the event.

A steward puts up signs, there are scenes of the competitors with their tractors and ploughs. Short sequences illustrate the ploughed furrows, sugar beet roots layed out for judging, a 'No to Maplin' sign and a horse-drawn plough. Both old and new tractors are featured. Mr. Joe Hunt receives his prize cup as winner of the championship.

Background Information

Maplin Sands (Foulness) was the proposed site for a third London Airport. The proposal was abandoned in 1974.
