On Call
1960 , Wymondham (Norfolk)
Cat no. 977
In an exercise carried out specially for the camera, the retained firemen of the Wymondham Fire Brigade put out a blazing building.
Female telephonists operating a switchboard receive an alarm call. The alarm bell is activated and the siren sounds on the warning tower. The brigade members are at home when each hears the siren. They stop what they are doing and run to their cars and bicycles and hurry into town. They arrive at the fire station in Market Street. A phone message is taken and the crew are given instructions. They put on their uniforms and board the silver and red engine, which speeds out of the fire station. Arriving at a blazing house in a rural location, the fire engine pulls up and the firemen start to unload their equipment. Views of the house are intercut with the crew setting up and then fighting the fire. When the fire is out, a call is made back to the station. Finally, back at base, the call is received and the incident logged on a map and a chart.
