1924 , Wisbech (Cambridgeshire)
Cat no. 972
Comprehensive local record of a typical day in the lives of the patients and staff at the North Cambridgeshire Hospital.
Establishing exterior views of the hospital. In her office, the matron types and speaks on the telephone. On Peckover and Trafford Southwell Wards, patients lie in bed, some with visitors, and a nurse attends to a dressing. On Vera Green Ward, the children are in high-sided cots. A nurse and child look through a scrapbook, a child kisses her doll and another plays with a toy tiger. On Wherry Ward, children visit a female patient, possibly their mother. People walk through the grounds on visiting day. In the kitchen, the cooks carve meat and serve dinner. In the operating theatre, a nurse puts instruments into a steriliser and staff scrub up at the sink. Surgeons and nurses perform an operation. The anaesthetist removes a mask from the patient's face. Instruments are dried and placed in a glass cabinet. In the X-ray department, in a sequence originally tinted red, the radiographer positions a patient and retreats behind a screen while putting on protective gauntlets. The X-ray is developed in the darkroom. A patient's arm is given gentle physiotherapy and a child sits in a bath of water receiving treatment. Children wearing goggles sit under a sun-lamp. A caption states, “You Can Obtain All These Benefits by Joining the Contributory Scheme. One Penny Per Week Covers Father, Mother and All Children Until Age of 16”. An anatomy lesson is given, with a blackboard diagram and model with removable organs. The nurses are filmed at leisure activities. Women iron sheets and baskets of laundry arrive at the hospital. A final caption is an appeal for support, “Please Help Us”.
