Festival Of Britain Festivities In Thetford
1951 , Thetford (Norfolk)
Cat no. 961
A local newsreel of Festival of Britain celebrations in Thetford.
The market square fills with carnival participants and watching crowds. A decorated float, the 'Anglian Cafe', features a live band, others represent the Co-op and Eastern Electricity. Mrs Connie Ramm appears as the Carnival Queen. Also identified are Mr. Rolph, Mr. Bernard and then Mr Dixon between two policeman. There is a close-up of a police inspector. Children in fancy dress and members of the crowd pose for the camera. More floats are shown, some with a nautical theme, including one featuring three girls from the Greenough family. Mr Culey's landrover pulls the 'Anglian Cafe' float. The floats parade around the square and a Burrell steam traction engine, the `Princess Mary', joins in the procession. Thetford Town Band completes the parade, with animated groups of children and adults posing for the camera.
