Raydon Airfield

1944 , Raydon (Suffolk)

Footage of the activities on USAAF airbase at Raydon, filmed by a fighter pilot stationed on the base during World War II.

GI airmen on Raydon Airfield with a red setter dog which appears throughout the film. Fighter pilots check their parachutes and head out to their aircraft. They are flying Mustangs with wing tanks fitted for extra range, probably for escort duties with B17 raids. They take off; then, evening shots and more pilots and their planes taking off; views Nissen huts on the base. Two American women are in fancy dress. A USAAF band, and a port with Mustangs in the distance. Mustangs take off and land, there are shots of the base taken from a moving vehicle. English street scenes follow including a 'Queen's Head' pub. There are shots of warships, an RAF rescue launch and officer, the launch at sea and other launches, an MTB (Motor Torpedo Boat) in port. There are further scenes of the port, sea target practice and RAF launches at sea. A close-up of an officer, a bridge in America (?) and, finally, US boats and launches in port.
