Amateur footage showing the effects on people and the land in Cambridgeshire during the floods of 1937.

The Mepal bridge is a dry bastion against the flooded fields and water flowing over the road in Cambridgeshire. Men are briefly seen in the distance filling sand bags; there are more views of flooding. In the main street of Littleport, flooding reaches the top floors of houses - a man is punting down the road. Flooded fields are marked only by the tops of willows along their borders. A haystack is surrounded by water. A road lined with sandbags holds the water back; high water flows beneath a metal railway bridge. The last shot is of Unwins builders' yard in Histon.

Background Information

The serious flooding occurred in March 1937 - a report in Hansard on 18th March reveals the concern in Parliament on how the local people were being assisted during the emergency, and if military engineers should be enlisted in addition to the expertise of the local Catchment Boards.
