Regatta

1973 , Manningtree (Essex)

Centred around the annual regatta of the Stour Sailing Club at Manningtree, this film also looks at the history of the area.

After the start of the dinghy race, there are views of the old town of Manningtree, the village of Mistley and Mistley Towers. Old stills of Mistley Quay introduce a sequence of sailing barges as they work the River Stour. The barges unload onto railway cars. Green Mills is shown, along with part of the old canal to Sudbury. Back at the regatta, there is a punt rowing race, followed by shots of a punt gunner returning from a trip. Peter Ainger shows how eels are caught in pipes and with an eel gore. Punt sailing is unique to the area. Joe Lucas prepares a sail, followed by the punt sailing race during which a punt capsizes.
