A promotional film for the British Trawlers Federation; features the fisherman at work, and a group of young trainees being taught the essential skills and technical knowledge required before going out to sea.

Fish are hauled aboard a trawler in rough seas. There are scenes of Lowestoft fish market, and the trawler, LT777 is in the harbour. Nets are repaired and the boat refuelled by Esso tankers. 30 ton blocks of ice are ground up and loaded, while the crew of men and boys arrives by car and train. The stresses and attractions of the job are described. LT979 leaves harbour and heads out to sea. At sea, there are views of the engine room and the deck being prepared for fishing. New crew are being trained on land. They undergo a medical examination, and some basic training including tying knots. Aboard a trawler, a new boy, John Clark, makes tea for the crew. Back at the school, the boys are taught navigation, how to read weather charts, lifeboat drill, firefighting and lifesaving skills. Using a small scale trawl, the boys study how it works. This is intercut with a crew being called out to haul a side trawl at sea. On shore, the boys learn how to repair and handle nets and how to use a radio telephone. Back on board the fish are gutted and stowed below, before the crew relax and eat. In school, the boys learn about engines and electronics. Similar equipment features on a boat at sea. A trawl net is shot at night. There is a sequence on fish finding equipment. A modern stern trawler and its various features are examined in port. At daybreak, an otter trawl is hauled aboard a trawler of the same type. Another trawl is shot, and the catch sorted into baskets. Various views of trawlers and fishing activity end the film.
