A cinemagazine story highlighting the importance of the East Coast herring industry at the time, and follows the process of a herring catch being turned into kippers ready for sale.

Women gut herring, then the fish are washed in a barrel of water. The fish are tipped into brine and transferred to quarter-cran (the unit of measurement for herring) baskets. The fish are placed on 'horses' to dry. There are views inside a smoke house and, finally, the kippers are removed from their spits and packed into boxes.
