Promotional production, in documentary format, describing the development of malting methods over the years.

Barley is delivered to R & W Paul's in Ipswich, both in bulk and in sacks. The malting methods of the last century are looked at in detail. Hand labour and wooden tools are employed. Turning, stick ploughing and raking are demonstrated. Baskets and wheelbarrows move the barley about. The process of turning barley into malt is carried out. In the Albion floor maltings, the 1906 malting process is shown. There is less hand labour and much is transported using travelling baskets and wheeled containers. Sacks of malt are loaded onto a coaster at Ipswich docks, and then more sacks are loaded onto a boat by crane at King George V docks on the Thames. R & W Paul's own fleet of barges is mentioned. Bulk malting, using the Saladin box process, is followed by views of the Albion maltings at Ipswich docks, built in the early 1960s. They use the Wan der Haufen system where nearly all the procedures are automated. Correct and even germination techniques are shown and samples are taken throughout the process to ensure consistency. Finally, an R. & W. Paul lorry makes its way along a motorway.
