A newsreel item about the women of Hockley who protest to the council by beginning overdue roadworks in the avenue where they live.
The women of Plumberow Avenue in Hockley, armed with shovels, work at making a road. They are frustrated by the council's slow progress in starting the work. Mrs Tibbles, aged 71, digs while another woman operates a Fordson tractor. “Hard done by men”, according to the commentary, are left looking after the children, while "It does a woman good to get out of the home." There is an appearance of local MP, Bernard Brain.
