The oldest, British purpose-built cinema is rediscovered and preserved.
Opening with early hand coloured film, the film looks at the history of the Electric Palace in King's Quay Street, Harwich, owned by Charles Burston of Norwich. A hand-turned projector, stills and movie film illustrate the time the cinema was first opened – 1911. The dilapidated cinema was rediscovered in the early 1970s. Shots of the building are intercut with silent and sound film. Projection booth equipment, and the electricity-generating Crossley gas engine are shown. At a public meeting in 1975, a trust was formed to preserve the cinema. Newspaper clippings record the scenes. Finally, there are more views of the cinema.
