The Flood
1963 , Fens (Cambridgeshire)
Cat no. 775
A drama involving a family of children marooned by floods, filmed on location in The Fens for The Children's Film Foundation.
Newsreel shots of the flooded Fens establish the context of the drama: a family whose children become cut off in their farmhouse by floods, after their parents depart for hospital for the birth of the new baby. The children courageously deal with the situation, which includes the arrival of a couple of older boys who steal their food. On locations around the Cambridgeshire Fens, there are scenes of a soup kitchen, an Emergency Clearing Station, and farmers and their wives at the market. An RAF helicopter and boats from Ely and Wisbech take part in the rescue operation, before the children are reunited with their parents.

Background Information
The Children's Film & Television Foundation was set up in 1951 (originally The Children's Film Foundation) . As well as developing films and tv programmes specially for children, it has encouraged new directors and young actors who later became well known artistes such as Francesca Annis, Michael Crawford, Susan George and Dennis Waterman. Directors such as Lewis Gilbert and Michael Powell have worked with the Foundation. Its website at www.cftf.org.uk states (as at April 2011) that the fund is closed and unable to take on any new projects.
