The pupils of Cottenham Village College explore shapes, numbers and measurement around the village.
Part 1. Shape. In the classroom children cut out a variety of shapes as part of an investigation into shapes, solids, symmetry and tessellation. In the village, they look at the shapes visible in buildings. Back in the classroom, there is work on solid, three-dimensional forms, illustrated in the village by chimneys, machinery and playground rides. Symmetry is looked at in the Church and, and a water diviner is featured. Finally, the children draw tessellations which they then discover in brick patterns and in the contruction of a straw stack (7:47 secs) Part 2. Numbers. In the classroom, the children study number, number patterns, calculation and graphs. In the village, they find number patterns in bricks, strawberries, bunches of flowers and a tray of eggs. Items in the window of Todd's Stores illustrate triangular numbers, as does a chemist counting pills in Hills Chemist. The children discover the mechanics of Calculation. In the village, pupils measure traffic movemement. They watch the instruments on petrol pumps, and look at irrigation equipment on a farm. (2:62 secs). Part 3. Measurement. The children watch a draper measuring yards of cloth, a harness maker cutting leather and an engineer at work. In school, the children use various methods of weighing. They observe a set of scales in a mobile shop. Old measurements are introduced. The children observe petrol pumps and the sundial on the Church. In school, the children use a model of an Egyptian sundial and experiment using a pendulum. The Maths Club travel in the mini-bus to spend a day surveying. They use a theodolite and a spirit level.
