A University of Cambridge rag with an Egyptian theme.

Crowds fill the Market Square at Cambridge as Lord Kum-Karven arrives in an open topped car with the Sultan. Treasure is carried out of an underground area by students dressed as Egyptians. A tobacconist's dummy of a snuff taking Scotsman is carried into the Square. More students dressed as women with prams appear as Pharaoh's wives. The film ends with an overhead shot of the market place showing people descending ropes from the front of the Victoria Cinema.

Background Information

The Topical Budget was a silent newsreel first issued in September 1911. During the First World War, the British Government took control, which led to a confusing variety of names, including the War Office Official Topical Budget from May 1917, and the Pictorial News (Official) from February 1918. In May 1919, the reel reverted to the name Topical Budget, but it was now owned by the newspaper magnate Edward Hulton. From September 1922 to August 1923, he released it as the Daily Sketch Topical Budget. The reel never converted to sound, and ceased production in March 1931. Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen in 1922 and uncovered the entrance to the tomb on November 4th.
