The Questioning City

1960 , Cambridge (Cambridgeshire)

A promotional film, focusing on University life and Cambridge's tradition of enquiry.

Views of rural Cambridgeshire and The Fens place Cambridge in its geographical context. Kings College Chapel, the College and river scenes establish the University and the city itself. Inside the Cavendish Laboratory students are at work. There are shots of a radio telescope and an electron microscope. In keeping with the theme of a 'questioning city', Pye's research and development laboratory is shown, complete with television camera. Peterhouse College is featured, with the commentary drawing attention to alumni Sir Frank Whittle, Sir Henry Cavendish and Lord Kelvin. University life is depicted in various sequences: King's College Choristers sing over scenes of the College's buildings; students punt along the Backs; tennis and croquet are played; a Shakespeare play is rehearsed at Queens'; there are shots of a cricket match; a sherry party on the college lawn at Trinity Hall; scenes of rowing and the May races; a May Ball ends with punting down the Cam to Grantchester. There are shots of the village and the Church. On graduation day, students parade through the streets in their robes to the Senate House.
