A compilation of material filmed by Billy Bishop, a warden of Cley nature reserve on the North Norfolk coast.

A marsh tide at Blakeney covers the quay. Views show the creek and the Blakeney Hotel. At Cley next the Sea, the windmill and the creek at high tide. Men pose beside a decorated cart hung with pheasants. A greasy pole competition is part of the Blakeney Regatta. Scenes shot in 1966 show a high tide and high wind, endangering many smaller boats. The tide floods part of the town, the quay and the car park. The Sheringham lifeboat crew, possibly at another Blakeney Regatta, and another greasy pole competition. There are dinghies under sail and close up shots of Cley windmill. Finally: a diving expedition at the site of a wreck off Blakeney (around 1962); fisherman show their catch of small sharks; tourist excursions leave the quay for Blakeney Point; Coypu hunters; a man and donkey cart in Cley High Street; a brood of bitterns (1955) and the warden's garden.

Background Information

Billy Bishop was the warden of the Cley nature reserve, the first bird reserve in the country, for 42 years. The son of a Blakeney fisherman, his grandfather had been the first warden of the Cley Nature Reserve, opened in 1926. It was the first bird reserve in the country, bought by Norwich doctor Sydney Long for the Norfolk Naturalists' Trust. He succeeded his grandfather as warden in 1937. He was a close friend of Sir Peter Scott and was highly regarded by Prince Philip. His work at the reserve attracted the avocet and the bearded reedling back to Norfolk. During World War II he served in the Royal Navy. He appeared on television occasionally and wrote a book, Cley Marsh And Its Birds. He retired in 1979 to be succeeded by his son, Bernard. He died in September, 1986, aged 73.
