[Aldborough]
1974 , Aldborough (Norfolk)
Cat no. 693
BBC East documentary profiling the small town of Aldborough.
The film opens with mute shots of the village green. The camera zooms out to show the cricket team playing a match on the green. There is a shot of 'Longstop' cottage and the owners, Dr. Eddy, the former village doctor and his wife, are interviewed. Dr. Eddy, who provides the commentary for the rest of the film, explains that they have lived in the village since 1929. Having seen the cricket on the green, he thought, This is it! He played for the cricket team and as the village doctor they made him Captain. There are shots of children sunbathing and shots of the match. People ride horses by the green and the narrator explains that when he first moved to Aldborough it was like a small market town. There were three butchers, three or four grocers, an ironmonger, a blacksmith, a saddler and a taylor. Dr. Eddy indicates a new restaurant that has opened by the green. The village is staying alive, he says. It never died. Local craftsmen are shown. These include a glass engraver and a furniture maker. Both are seen at work and there are shots of their completed products. Back on the green, people are watching the cricket. There are flint cottages along the green. Dr. Eddy comments that it takes about ten years to become accepted here. There is a shot of St. Mary's Church and John Brown's House. On the green, a group of boys are playing a less formal game of cricket. People laze around, enjoying the sun. There are shots of the children's playground and the narrator alludes to the 1973 campaign to plant trees. There is a shot of some saplings, although the narrator explains that this campaign was not popular with everyone because people feared it would spoil their view of the green and the cricket.
