[Blundeston]

1974 , Blundeston (Suffolk)

BBC documentary profiling the village of Blundeston.

A shot of the old windmill and of village houses. Some of these are modern. People cut their hedge and three women walk down the road. There are further shots of the village and close up shots of some of the house names. These reflect the connections of Blundeston with the author Charles Dickens as the houses are named after characters from his novels; Copperfield, Peggotty, Micawber, Dorrit and Pickwick. In mute shots, Jean Goodman is seen talking to the publican at the Plough Inn. There is a close-up shot of the sign on the wall of the Inn. Barkis (The Carrier) in the novel DAVID COPPERFIELD by Charles Dickens started from here. There are further village scenes and Jean Goodman walks along the road talking to the parish priest. Over shots of the Church of St. Mary The Virgin, and shots of a house connected with Dickens, he explains about the connections with Dickens and about the tourists who visit the village. He shows Ms. Goodman a pen for stray animals and there is a close-up shot of the sundial on the Church, mentioned in `David Copperfield'. There are shots of the graveyard and of the priest reading a book resting on one of the tombs. There are further shots of the surrounding countryside. The final shots are of Jean Goodman with the village sign.
