[Ugley]
1975 , Ugley (Essex)
Cat no. 689
BBC East documentary profiling the village Ugley.
The film opens with shots of Ugley, showing the village green and the pond. It is apparent immediately that 'Ugley' doesn't live up to its name. There is a shot of Haywood Cottage and its owner, Mrs. Lawrence, walks through the village to a meeting of the Women's Institute sub-committee in the summer house at the home of Miss Nancy Tenant. On the way there are further shots of the village and a sign post. This signs to Ugley, Ugley Green and Elsenham and Snakes Lane. At the meeting of the sub-committee, Miss Tenant, the Honorary Secretary, talks about the W.I. and about the village over shots of the meeting. She mentions an attempt to change the village name to 'Oakley', not welcomed by the villagers, and about the possible origins of Ugley, after 'Uggle' the Dane. The next shot is of Miss Tenant's former home, Orford House. She and her sister visit the present owners Mr. and Mrs. Butterworth. Jean Goodman talks about the house's links with King Charles I. There are shots of the village, showing the former public house, shop and post office, all now private houses. In the street, the former post master, Bert Little, now 84 years of age, talks with Wendy Kemp. Jean Goodman relates a story that during World War II, visiting airmen used to send themselves letters to receive an Ugley postmark. The downside of country living during the winter is highlighted. The film shows farmer's wife, Glynis Parker walking along a flooded, muddy road. At Fealgate Farm, Mrs. Ralph Fielden shows her husband's collection of 19th century farm waggons. These are displayed in an old style shelter.Mr. Don Wombwell talks about his early life in the village. He shows the camera a photograph of his wife in her maid's uniform and a photograph of an old waggon with which he worked. He talks about his work on the farm and about working conditions. He and his wife are filmed in the porch of their cottage. The final shots are of horses being ridden through the village and further village shots.
