[Ixworth]

1974 , Ixworth (Suffolk)

BBC documentary profiling the village of Ixworth.

This film opens with shots of a stream running through a garden. There are shots of the village, showing half timbered cottages. In a garden a lady tends her roses. There are further shots of the village. Mrs. Sylvia Colman, an archivist, accompanies Jean Goodman, showing her some of the houses in the village, including St. Mary's Church and the vicarage, built in 1848. The woman explains that the village's problem is the heavy traffic passing through on the A143 and the A1088. There are shots of the traffic and of the effects of the pollution on some buildings. There are further traffic shots showing juggernauts and double decker buses passing through the village. At the Priory, home of Audrey and Peter Nissen, Peter Nissen takes up the story. He admits that he and his wife are lucky. Their house is set back from the road and is screened by trees. Accompanying Jean Goodman through the village he explains that in the nine years he has lived in his house, his front wall has been knocked down five times. Another cottage has had a wall knocked out. The is illustrated. A wall on the main Thetford road has been knocked down twice. There is a shot of this, still a pile of rubble. The man explains that there have been three fatal accidents on the main road through the village in the last eighteen months. The by-pass, promised for 1975 has been indefinitely postponed. The film moves on the show a private wildfowl centre, owned by Bob Dew. Colonel Johnson, a wildlife author, lives next door. There are shots of geese, swans and of a golden pheasant. Norman Turner makes models of a man ploughing and of milk maids. There are further village shots showing Norman Turner painting. At the 12th century Abbey, John Rowe studies for his bar examinations. At the local bowls green George Everett, a former English Bowling Federation singles champion, is seen bowling. Jean Goodman climbs aboard an old style bus, owned by Jack Mullroy. The final shots are of the bus passing through the village, some of the shots being taken from the bus. Please note that the latter part of this film has no soundtrack.
