Scenes on the River Thames

The River Thames around Tower Bridge. There is a shot of a paddle steamer and of several other boats moored nearby. The leaves of the Bridge rise to allow through a cargo ship and the paddle steamer passes under. The bridge closes. The Captain is filmed on the steamer and the film shows the scenery from the boat as it passes along the Thames. It shows an industrial, working river as it heads towards the Royal Greenwich Hospital. There are shots of the hospital filmed from the steamer. The steamer continues, showing docks, a dredger, various ships and boats and numerous sailing barges, some in operation, some in port. We see the new landing stage at Tilbury and many cargo vessels as well as the USS Raleigh and British navel vessels. At Canvey Island the film shows the round houses built by the Dutch in the 17th century and the village. There are sailors talking in the street. There are shots of the Hoy Inn, (South) Benfleet, built in 1100 AD, and the Church of St. Mary the Virgin is visible in the background. There are more river scenes before the film concludes at Southend. The landing stage on Southend Pier is filmed from the steamer. There are shots of the Pier Railway and of the sea front and town as the cinematographer travels towards the town on the railway.
