The process of harvesting the pea crop, and the Royal Show at Cambridge, 1961
The film opens with tractor mounted ploughs preparing the ground. Bags of fertiliser are emptied into tractor mounted spreaders and these spread the fertiliser. There is a man travelling on the back of the spreader. A crawler tractor pulls a harrow across a field and then seed peas are emptied into a drill. Two people, a man and a boy, ride on the back of the drill. The field is rolled. There is a close up shot of the boy.The young crop is sprayed in the spring. The crop is checked an there are shots of the fields showing scarecrows. The peas are harvested. They are placed onto tripods (cocks) by hand. The harvester goes from cock to cock and the piles are placed in by hand. Another method is shown; the peas lay in rows and the harvester picks up the crop itself. The thrashed peas are taken away by lorry. Throughout the film there are close up shots of the operation. The next sequence shows the Royal Show at Cambridge between 4th and 7th July, 1961. At the Royal Pavilion, three of Mr. Whitwell's employees receive long service medals from HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who is seen leaving by car. The men pose for the camera. The final sequence shows the streets of Bury St. Edmunds decorated in preparation for the visit of HM The Queen. There are shots of the Abby Gardens and then HM drives through the gardens in an open topped vehicle. The crowds are filmed on Angel Hill. The film ends with a shot of the flag flying of the Athenaeum.
