The pedestrianisation of Norwich City Centre.

The film begins by showing mute shots of Magdalen Street. Traffic passes along it and people are out shopping. There are views of Stumps Cross and of Barclays Bank. Dick Graham interviews Mr. King about a proposed scheme to build an inner link road for Norwich and to turn Magdalen Street into a pedestrian shopping street. He explains that traffic would be re-routed down an established street. There are diagrams displayed which show a ring and loop system as proposed and a ring and return loop system that would provide more pedestrian centres. Dick Graham asks if Mr. King's plan would involve less demolition. He agrees that it would certainly mean no more demolition and may mean less.

These shots of Magdalen Street were taken after the Civic Trust Scheme to regenerate the area. See: Norwich, Norfolk, c. 1960, The Story Of Magdalen Street.This film shows an area of Norwich that was changed considerably by the construction of the Inner Ring Road. The area known as Stumps Cross and the now famous building that housed Barclays Bank were demolished to make way for the concrete flyover carrying the new road. Magdalen Street never became pedestrianised.
