This Life In The Day Of Manningtree Station begins with exterior shots of the Station and its buildings, past and present. Inside the station there are shots of the architectural features of the Victorian station building. Throughout the film there are shots of passenger and goods trains on the line, arriving and leaving the station. Passengers are filmed at Manningtree Station board and leaving their trains. There is also a shot of an operator working manual railway gates.Speaking to the camera, station staff introduce themselves and explain their duties. Jim Westwood, the Senior Railman describes the shift system, Dick Polly and Paul Rathbone are shunters. Dick Polly explains a film sequence of an engine taking trucks to the plastics factory siding at Brantham. There are interior scenes from the cab and shots from the moving train. Mr. Russell Parker is a porter. Jim Westwood explains that he worked at Cromer High, Ipswich, Colchester and Kelvedon Stations before coming to work at Manningtree. An early morning commuter train leaves for London. Russell Porter talks through a sequence about cleaning duties and changing the oil in the semaphore lamps. He is seen hanging the lamps. Colin Churchyard explains how trains link up and about the services to Norwich and London.There are shots from the interior of the signal box at Manningtree South Junction. The signalman explains about types of trains and the process for clearing trains to pass through one's sector. The track maintenance men are filmed in their track side hut followed by the interior of the passenger waiting room. In the staff rest room, they drink tea. There are shots of the booking office and general shots from around the station.
