The Golden Wedding of Mr. & Mrs. William Gamble.

The celebrations for the Golden Wedding of Mr. & Mrs. Gamble. The film, appears to show the family attempting, and failing to assemble for a family group shot. Firstly, two boys run away and then another group is playing 'ring-a-ring-a-roses.' The Gambles are a large family and there are many children present. All, adult and children, are dressed in their best clothes. As such, the film is a good record of middle-class fashions shortly after World War I. Mr. and Mrs. Gamble do not appear to feature in the remainder of the film.

Background Information

William Gamble was born on 24th December, 1843 and died on 4th December, 1921. He was an agriculturist and cattle dealer. As well as officiating at agricultural shows, he was responsible for stocking the Royal farm at Sandringham with highland cattle. Whilst living at Home Farm, North Runcton, he was a church warden. He and his wife, nee Anna Marie Locke of South Lynn, had 16 children. 13 of them attended the Golden Wedding celebrations seen here. They had 38 grandchildren. Jack Campbell was the couple's son. (He changed his name.) He ran a cinema in Grantham. There were some other family films but these were shot on nitrate, some of which had deteriorated beyond restoration. Some others were lost in a fire at Jack Gamble's cinema. His daughter was the actress Judy Campbell and her daughter the actress Jane Birkin.
