The opening of the new Trinity House Headquarters by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

Scenes inside the control centre when it was situated in the Low Lighthouse. The Pilot is seen in a motor launch and the commentary explains the role of the pilot service. Its history is told over a series of stills. The Duke of Edinburgh opens the new Trinity House Headquarters in 1976. Roland Jacques, a pilot, catches a motor launch out to the passenger ferry 'Dana Regina.' He describes the process of bringing the ferry into Parkeston Quay. The film shows him entering the ferry from the motor launch and then on board and on the bridge. There are good shots of the harbour as the ferry docks and the film shows cars leaving the ferry. Off Harwich, aboard the 'Pathfinder' we meet a reserve of pilots waiting for passing vessels. Philip Vanner, a pilot joins a ship at night and describes the differences of piloting a boat at night vis-?-vis daylight. He describes how the pilot system works in this respect.At Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, Frank Taylor pilots a small coaster into the harbour at Wells. This sequence contains some good shots of Wells Harbour and some beautiful twilight scenes of the sea and estuary.The last subject shows the large container ship 'America Accord' being brought into Felixstowe Harbour, guided by two tugs. This is described in full by the commentary, that also discusses communications between the various parties.Over shots of the Port of Felixstowe, the Pilots explain the importance of the pilot service. They feel that it adds local knowledge and overcomes possible language barriers. They emphasise that pollution risks make safety paramount. Their service also adds a human factor to the safe conduct of shipping.
