Our Home Town

1940s , Fenstanton (Cambridgeshire)

Amateur film showing scenes around the village of Fenstanton.

The Cambridgeshire village of Fenstanton on an ordinary day and the people going about their everyday business. It possesses 'fly on the wall' characteristics as no-one appears to be posing for the camera. The film begins in High Street showing the street at various points and shoots in different directions. It features a large, half-timbered building, set back from the road behind a large garden. A car is parked outside. The clock tower also appears in the shots. There are cars, bicycles, motorcycles and lorries driving through the street. The sequence finishes with a shot of the dairy showing milk churns. In Bell Lane, there are shots of the houses and shops, including C. King, Grocers. These show a chapel to the left of the picture and also a parked motorcycle. The milk lorry passes the camera. At the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, a woman and a man leave through the picket gate. There are shots of the Church and in particular the war memorial and recent graves with flowers still on them. There is a brief shot of Chequers Lane and then of the Manse. The film ends by focusing on the houses of Fenstanton. These range from a 1930s' style bungalow to thatched cottages.
